Community with Northwood Academy Charter School and Marc Mastropietro

What an incredible two months of working on Community with my little Northwood Champions! Over the months of November and December, the students worked incredibly hard focusing on ways to help not only our school community, but our local and global community as well. We kicked off the month of November with our monthly video lesson from Marc. Marc taught us the difference between geographical and social communities. He taught us that a geographical community is made up of people who live around us - our neighbors and people in our neighborhoods and a social community includes people who share the same interest as you. After Marc gave the students some really great examples of some ways in which he has helped both his geographical and social communities, my students were eager to brainstorm, choose and begin helping their communities. To help our social community, the students are participating in buddy reading with our first grade community. Each month, the students meet with their first grade buddy reader to read to and teach great reading strategies.

To help our global community the students have partnered with Wish Them Well, an amazing organization that helps build water wells in Togo, Africa for the many who are unable to have fresh and clean water. The students will also be participating in this initiative for the entire year. The students will be organizing and hosting fundraisers throughout the year to raise $2,000 to build a new water well in Togo. This month we were excited to have the founder, Amina Capaldi join us to learn more about the need in Togo, Africa. After our visit with Amina, the students participated in the Water Challenge. Students traveled around the halls and stairwells in our building while carrying gallon jugs of water to simulate the difficult journey the people in Togo have to endure to obtain water.

The students were also excited to generate some ways to help our Philadelphia community during the holiday season and decided on a food drive for Philabundance. With the help of our school community and the tireless efforts of the students, they were able to raise 500 pounds (587 items) of food donations for families in need across the city of Philadelphia.

The topic of Community is one that my students hold very close to their hearts. To watch them work together to provide better opportunites for others within our school community, local community and global community has been so heart felt.
